National Scan of Best Practices for Chemical Treatments on Unpaved Roads

Background

In response to the 2008 Road Dust Management and Future Needs Conference, FHWA investigated the state of road dust management practices across the country. In 2010, FHWA, along with Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University and a diverse team of stakeholders representing federal, state and local agencies, academic institutions, and private industry, conducted a state of the practice survey and a national scan tour. Results of both efforts will be included in a handbook designed to help practitioners better understand the broad and complex programmatic aspects of unpaved road management.
